Many towns in texas have “a” bakery.  A bakery that’s been part of the town fabric for many decades.  A bakery that’s made it’s name for something – quite frequently it’s fruitcakes in Texas.  The Slaton Bakery has its own fruitcake.  But more than likely, it made its name with vanilla wafers.  Their vanilla wafers and ginger snaps are available all across Texas – even at the HEB stores!!  They are worth it!  The Slaton Bakery was the first to produce sliced hamburger buns and hot dog buns in Texas.  For a history of the bakery go here http://www.theslatonbakery.com/history.html  If you stop for sandwiches or sweet treats – make sure you visit the back room – where they have many bakery historical items on display in a small museum.
