go to Sonora

go to Historic Sutton County Jail

This is a true west Texas county.  Big ranches, few people.  Cattle, wool, etc. abound.  Sonora, itself, is a neat early 20th century town.  But what really sets off this isolated community is its beautiful Victorian period piece of a courthouse.  The Ruffini brothers were a favorite out in the western part of the state, and this little gem shows us why.  Lots of ginerbread and icing.  And in front of the courthouse, there are more historic signs than you’ll ever have time to read.  Many have to do with local ranches.  The Sutton County courthouse is sure to please many afficiandos and make plenty of top 20 courthouses of Texas lists.

Just went out and photographed this one a couple weeks ago. Nice visit….especially since a friend works in the courthouse! Truly a beautiful building and very well maintained! You can certainly tell they are proud of their courthouse. I have a special appreciation for the Ruffini buildings….and drove on over to Ozona and got that one as well! Love your website. Thanks!
