Retired San Augustine County Jail

go to San Augustine County Courthouse
go to San Augustine Town Square

I’ve tried to uncover the story on this building, without a whole lot of success.  I was able to find a very recent story that the Garden Club of San Augustine, has gone about developing a project to restore the old building.  It was built in 1919, and is called the N L Tindall building.  So I don’t know if it was built as a jail originally or taken over later by the Sherrif”s Department.  It did serve as the county jail up until 2000 – just don’t know when it started to serve as the jail.  Anyhow – the Garden Club of San Augustine must be one fantastic organization!  This same organization spearheaded the restoration of the county’s lovely 1927 courthouse next door.

The SA Garden Club is an amazing organization, and they have finished the Jail Museum restoration! This was our county jail for decades until a new one was built about forty years ago, and the original building fell into disrepair – but it is glorious again, come and see! The “jail” now operates as a monument to local law enforcement memorabilia and lore, open to the public with no admission charge. Please check for hours.
