Cameron County has 2 former jails still standing. One – from the 1800’s is very plain and except for the heavy doors, doesn’t really show signs of being the historic jail house it is.
The other is a 1900 hundreds jail designed by Atlee B. Ayers, the architect of the 1912 courthouse. It currently houses a law firm – which has done a good job maintaining the feeling of being in a jail. I wonder how many clients are drawn in or pushed away by the decor? Certainly, the law firm has lots of opportunities for advertising slogans.
