Stinson Field

Stinson Field is one of the most historic airfields in the U.S.  The Stinson family, along with Ft. Sam Houston, represent the heart of the development of military aviation.  The actual building here was a WPA project and it exhibits the moderne/art deco style of the 1930’s.  The field, developed by the Stinson’s, eventually became the commercial flight airport for San Antonio and remained so until the establishment of the San Antonio International Airport.  The airport is still used for private planes.

If visiting the Espada Mission, you may well pass right by Stinson Field.  Probably well worth a quick stop and look see – especially if you’re going during the day and the Stinson Field Cafe is open.  Good food (home of the famous mango flan) and a wonderful look over the airstrip make this a good choice for a refreshing stop on your San Antonio journeys.
