Walker County Courthouse

see Historic Walker County Jail

County Seat – Huntsville
Built – 1970
Style – Modern
Architect – Joiner, Coburn & King
Photographed – 7/9/08

Well – as modern courthouses go – this one isn’t terribly interesting.  Not that isn’t OK – it’s just not too exciting.  The 1888 courthouse burned (the upper floor) and so they abandoned it.  It could be a case of convenient excuse – or too high a restoration cost – whatever, Texas lost one of its’ oldest courthouses when the current courthouse was built and the old one torn town.  A little bit of interest – most of the brick from the old courthouse was bought and used to build a River Oaks mansion in Houston.  There is an interesting sky walk from the courthouse with a large mural of area history and commerce.
