This was actually one of the first courthouses we had visited. However, on that first visit, the courthouse was so completely walled in and difficult to photograph that I refused to count that as a visit. The courthouse had been remodeled in 1965 making significant architectural changes. The restoration too it back to its original design.
As is so common in this style, the tile work was nice, and the middle of the courthouse presents a open space up 3 floors to the rotunda. It was filled with a Christmas tree on this visit – but that just adds charm. The copper dome and the statue of the blindfolded Themis are probably the highlights on the exterior.
The courtroom has a significant amount of history, with successful 1924 prosecution of the Ku Klux Klan by Dan Moody. The district attorney used that success to move on to election as Texas Attorney General and then as the youngest governor in Texas. As Attorney General – he investigated the former Gov. Ferguson and the current Gov. – Ma Ferguson.
