Chambers County Courthouse is a straight-forward moderne-styled courthouse straight out of the 30’s. WPA funds were used, and it includes all of the moderne prerequisites – carvings in the building, representing the major crops and sports of the area, the lamps inside and out and the name carved in the building over the entrance. Probably the one thing that really stood in this building was the interior – and secifically, the tiled floors. Quite bright and quite ornate. Coupled with the nearby courthouse of Liberty County, these two courthouses make a nice trip out of Houston – with focus on the moderne style.
Anhuac is a fairly sleepy town, off the beaten path. There’s lots of fishing and quiet gulf-side escapes. I believe that rice farming is or was a mainstay in this community.
