Our first stop off the Queen Mary was Salisbury. A very old city centered around its’ magnificent cathedral. As luck would have it – the interior of the cathedral was closed for a contest of some sort for area schools. Hugely disappointing – but the exterior was as stunning as advertised, we did see a copy of the Magna Carta and the close around the cathedral contained some wonderful old buildings and lots of gardens.
The walk around Salisbury was pleasant. There is lots of preservation and Salisbury is very walkable. Certainly worth a visit.
The other highlight in Salisbury was the church of St. Thomas and St. Edmund. A very old church – probably built around the same time as the cathedral. What makes this church so special was the medieval Doomsday painting – one of best preserved in England.
Then it was on to Stonehenge. Very old – very famous – and very visited. You can’t get up to the stones, which makes a lot of sense, considering the crowds.
After Stonehenge – we drove on to our apartment. Have to say, for the money, location and size – this apartment ticked a lot of boxes. Very quiet and rural. A lovely church on the grounds. We each had our own bed and bath. And it was easy to get to all our destinations.
