Scottus College & Our Lady of Guadalupe – Hebbronville

Driving through Hebbronville (to capture the Jim Hogg Courthouse is pictures) we noticed the domed church sitting up about a 1/4 of a mile.  The church is large and very Spanish in style – and has quite a few interesting items inside – though the building itself is fairly new.  What we didn’t see and know was there was Scottus College.  An interesting building sitting next to the church.  Obviously much older in construction – it has a very interesting breezeway walk over the top of the building.

Scotus College

a Franciscan seminary, moved to Hebbronville from Mexico to escape persecution. It could accommodate up to twenty students preparing for the priesthood. During the 20s and 30s – the anti-Catholic Mexican government caused a Franciscan Seminary to relocate to Hebbronville. It remains the most impressive edifice in Hebbronville, including the courthouse. It is still owned by the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Mexico. (taken from various webpages).  Evidently, the College is no longer an active seminary – but not real sure on that.

Our Lady of Guadalupe – a Spanish Mission style church – modern in construction but it’s history goes back to the early 1900’s.  It has nice touches inside – the altar, the blue-green glassed dome, the side altars.  The altar is evidently from Old Mexico.  The doors have to be old, as well, and imported.  I’ve attached a couple of links that 1 – describe the parish 75th anniversary and 2 – A visitors replay of a guided tour to the church.
